She was the embodiment of encouragement, patience, kindness, and genuine care for those around her. Thoughts and prayers are with her friends, family and students and all who were touched by her beautiful voice and spirit. She will be deeply missed.
Who was Keyona Willis?
Keyona Willis was a versatile performer and educator with a passion for teaching. She has performed in a wide range of venues, from opera houses and theatres to jazz combos and orchestral concerts, exploring various genres.
Her interest in vocal versatility led her to study functional voice training, earning certifications in Somatic Voicework™, Estill Voice Training, Soul Ingredients® Methodology, and Singing Health Specialization.
Willis’ doctoral research, “The Crossover Opera Singer: Bridging the Gap Between Opera and Musical Theatre,” explores how to manage the varying vocal demands in modern performance culture.
With extensive training, she tailors healthy vocal techniques for students at all levels, helping many achieve success on Broadway, in film, and internationally. She also supports singers recovering from voice therapy.
Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Willis has continued performing notable roles, such as Mimi in ‘La Bohème’ with Opera Columbus, and has upcoming performances with the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra.
