Cole Carlson Detroit Lakes MN Car Accident, Stacey Nelson Death, 2 died in crash on Highway 59

Cole Carlson, 33-year-old resident of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and a beloved brother and son passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2024. He was announced dead in a social media post that read “Rest in peace my beautiful spunky handsome funny loving hilarious cousin Cole Carlson I will never forget the memories we made and all the times that you never called me by my name just cousin my heart hurts and I hope you don’t raise to much hell with Kyle up their! I will never forget you Cole I love you so big forever and ever!”

The identities of the two men who died in a collision on Highway 59 on Tuesday have been made public by the Minnesota State Patrol. Cole Michael Carlson, 33, of Detroit Lakes was the driver, and Stacey Marlyn Nelson, 60, of Hawley was the passenger. According to a Minnesota State Patrol crash report, they perished in a three-vehicle collision on state Highway 59 near milepost 269 north of Detroit Lakes on Tuesday afternoon.

Nelson was riding in the 1996 Toyota Corolla that Carlson was driving. The State Patrol said that although both were not using seatbelts, the airbags did go off. The other vehicles in the collision were a 2015 Chrysler Town and Country piloted by Marvin Leroy St. Germain, 84, of Fosston, and a 2003 Ford Econoline driven by Evette Elana Fox, 59, of Bagley. The 82-year-old Fosston resident Marie Annette St. Germain was riding in the Chrysler.

Each of the three had a seat belt on. The Chrysler’s airbags deflated, but not the Ford’s. While the St. Germains were taken to the Essentia Health St. Mary’s emergency room with non-life-threatening injuries, Fox escaped unharmed. Each of the three had a seat belt on. According to the police, the Chrysler was going south on Highway 59, while the Toyota, Ford, and other vehicles were heading north.

The names were made public on Wednesday afternoon, although the exact sequence of events that preceded the catastrophe is still being looked into. At 1:47 p.m., an accident occurred on dry pavement in Detroit Township. The crash did not involve drinking. At the site, the State Patrol received assistance from the Detroit Lakes Fire Department, St. Mary’s EMS, and the Becker County Sheriff’s Office.

Stacey Nelson and Cole Carlson obituary and funeral arrangements will be released by their families at a later date.
